What makes a man or woman burn for the Gospel? It is the restless knowledge that there is Someone greater, worth burning for. The martyr is martyred because he has caught a glimpse of the glory of God and could not remain silent!

Garbage, Flip Flops, and Astronomy Textbooks

So last night I decided that since I had to get up early to go to work that I would take the trash out on Monday night (obviously because trash comes on Tuesday morning, amazing!). Anyway, it was pretty nippy Monday night, and not wanting to belabor my task I put on the pair of shoes closest to the door, my bazooka bubble gum flip flops. As I was hauling out the garbage cans, and as my toes began to feel the icy bite, the silvery stars grabbed my attention. You see I spent all last semester taking an astronomy class where we had to study the constellations and what-not. So, I tried locating some of the objects that I had learned about. And then as I was pondering Orion's belt and my frostbit lowermost digits, it struck me and I was appalled, no not that frostbite is fast but the amount of time my Astronomy textbook spent on explaining the origin of the universe. So, when I got inside I ran to my textbook and counted 11 of 24 chapters and numerous uncounted passages that discussed a Secular explanation for the origin of our universe. Literally, well over 1/2 of the text was dedicated to origins. However, what percentage do our churches dedicate to origins? Why don't we hear about Genesis and the story of our Creator and His marvelous creation? When I look at the heavens I cannot help but wonder at the genius of our Creator's mind. He made the Eskimo nebula (see above). God said let there be and there was the Eskimo Nebula. I want to remind you that although the orange band around it is 6,000,000,000,000 miles across and it is 5,000 light years away, God has it in control. He made it and it is his. The secular humanist understand that a universe without a Creator will produce the exaltation of man (the epitome of Adam's folly) which is what we all desire in our depravity. However, when we recognize God as Creator of everything, including the Eskimo Nebula, we will be able to give up our desire for self-exaltation and seek the Exaltation of the Almighty. So, that's the corolation between Garbage Cans, Flip Flops, and Astronomy Textbooks!

For His Renown,
BenZ

SO, you force me to re-comment the SAME thing after deleting my other astronomy comment before. Oh well. It is worth it!

Before, I said that I too took a winter astronomy class in college and was FLABERGASTED by how vast the universe is...and more importantly, how big our God is. And how big His capacity to create beauty is. My favorite thing I saw through a powerful telescope in that class was Pleiades, the "Seven Sisters" star cluster surrounded by nebula that looks like a smudge to the naked eye. Ben, when I looked through the telescope and saw it, my breath was gone, my knees week, and my mind fuzzed to nothing all at once. It seriously is THE MOST beautiful thing I have ever laid eyes on.

And to think. God made it to bring glory to Himself. And how can anyone see that kind of beauty and not marvel at the Creator of the Universe? And thank Him for allowing us such a sight!?

Search for it on Google Images. Pleiades. Simply stunning!

Ben,
I'm sure you have but just to be sure, have you ever heard of Answers in Genesis? They are all about 6 day creation and if you don't believe that how can you believe the rest of the bible. www.answersingenesis.org

Absolutely, I have thoroughly used AIG many times for my science classes. I got flunked on one assignment because I used the AIG website as my source and of course AIG isn't scientific! LOL! I just laughed. It was completely unfair!

Great entry, BenZ. If garbage can be so inspiring, I look forward to reading what else you have to say. Besides my regular blog, I have 6 others, one on faith and church, and I'll probably link to you at that one.

Norma, thanks, and I'm glad that you found it encouraging. I really pray that true believers will begin using any medium to get the words of God out. It is so fascinating that God uses blogs to spread His fame and Renown. Yes, the heavens declare that He's glorious!
